You can make environmentally friendly cleaners yourself for a fraction of the cost of ready-made and concentrates you find in stores!

We all have heard that common products we use in our home emit formaldehyde, dioxins chlorine and sodium hydroxide. These ingredients are known carcinogens, can cause everything from headaches to cancer and are poisonous if accidentally swallowed.

Here are a few cheap and easy effective household cleaners to get you inspired to tackle that scummy shower, and save your family from nasty fumes.

All that you need are empty plastic spray bottles to store these concoctions in and you will have a child, pet and earth-friendly supply of cleaning agents ready to use for any household cleaning situation!

Bleach-Free Abrasive Scrub

Uses include: Tubs, shower doors, sinks, stove tops and microwaves.

  • Baking Soda
  • Lemon sliced in half

  1. Sprinkle baking soda liberally on a damp surface.
  2. Using the cut side of the lemon half, rub the baking soda in a circular motion over the surface.
  3. Rinse with water, or wipe with a damp sponge.
Glass Cleaner

Use anywhere for a streak free shine.

  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Water

  1. In an empty spray bottle, mix 2 parts vinegar to one part water.
  2. Spray on the desired surface.
  3. Wipe off with paper towel or craft paper.
  4. Buff to remove streaks.
Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Using this is fun for kids! It also makes a great drain deodorizer!

  • Baking Soda
  • Distilled white Vinegar

  1. Liberally sprinkle baking soda all around toilet bowl.
  2. Pour some vinegar directly on the baking soda.
  3. After the bubbling stops, use your toilet brush as usual, then flush.
  4. Repeat the same process to deodorize drains and disposals by directly pouring baking soda and then vinegar into your drains.
Air Freshener

Non-aerosol and safe, all-natural customizable fragrance.

  • Fragrance Oil
  • Water

  1. In an empty spray bottle, add water until two-thirds full.
  2. Add ten or more drops of fragrance oil.
  3. Shake to combine, spray as you normally would air freshener or fabric refresher.
Fabric Softener

Add to the rinse cycle of your washer for a septic-safe effective softener.

  • Vinegar
  • Fragrance Oil

  1. After your washing machine fills for the final rinse, add one half cup of white vinegar directly to the water.
  2. Add ten to twenty drops of fragrance oil.
All-Purpose Spray Cleaner

Use on counters, refrigerators or floors.

  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Lemon Oil

  1. Mix two parts water to one part white vinegar in a spray bottle.
  2. Add twenty to thirty drops of lemon oil.
  3. Spray on surfaces as you would any all purpose cleaner.
  4. Wipe off with a clean cloth or paper towels.
